How to encrypt iPhone file backups in iTunes

You can back up your iPhone with iTunes software on a PC. This backup is very useful in certain cases, for example, when you want to try to upgrade to the latest version of iOS. 

Where making this backup will come in handy when you later want to go back to your old iOS. So you don't need to start all over again from scratch.

If you want, you can encrypt the existing backup file with a password. Especially if you have sensitive information on your iPhone, then you should do so.

Encrypt iPhone file backups in iTunes

  • Open iTunes.
  • Connect iTunes with iPhone.
  • Click on your device in iTunes.
  • Click the Summary menu in the left pane.
  • In the Backup menu, check the Encrypt Local Backup option.


  • Enter the password along with confirmation. If you clicked the Set Password option.

Once the process is complete, iTunes will once again back up your iPhone. Make sure you remember the encryption password, as you will need it again when you want to restore your iPhone data.
